The primary mandate of Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal is to produce a biennale that explores issues of the image but also offers an opportunity to reflect on issues germane to photography and the contemporary image to the general public. Taking advantage of its presence in Saint-Henri in this 10th presentation, Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal initiated a special project in collaboration with La maison des jeunes La Galerie, a community organization that offers a program of activities for local youth with the aim of aiding them to become responsible, active and thoughtful citizens.

Entitled Exploration Saint-Henri, the project consists of three sections: a series visits to the exhibitions in Saint-Henri, a photography workshop with a professional artist, and the production and presentation of the works created by the young participants.

The project Exploration Saint-Henri is coordinated by Swiss-born Montréal artist Thomas Kneubühler whose large-format works are distributed on a number of walls in the Saint-Henri area in the form of public space interventions. The youth have been invited to view the works of a group of artists presented in public spaces and in former industrial buildings in this neighbourhood. These artists include: Carlos & Jason Sanchez (Canada), Trine Søndergaard & Nicolaï Howalt (Denmark), Jesper Just (Denmark), Althea Thauberger (Canada/Germany), Salla Tikkä (Finland), Teresa Hubbard & Alexander Birchler (U.S.A.). The team of cultural mediators from Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal conducted informal, guided tours of the exhibitions that were designed to offer the youth a variety of ways of reflecting upon and interpreting the works and to help them better appreciate contemporary art.

The youth were also invited to participate in a photography workshop specially organized by Thomas Kneubülher for the project. The local and general public is invited to view the photographic works of these young artists from October 19th to November 1st at Caffè Mariani and on this Web site. Congratulations to all the young participants for their audacity and perseverance!
